Local medical experts in Harbin, the capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, have developed a kind of sponge-like substance that could be used to stop bleeding in surgical operations.
Professor Yue Wu and his colleagues from the No.1 Hospital attached to the Harbin Medical University, invented the so-called hemostatic sponge after years of research and experiments, and have patented their invention.
The hemostatic sponge is made mainly from conch and could replace the existing hemostat widely used in the world, said Yue. He said the hemostatic sponge produces no side effects and its cost is equivalent to the conventional hemostat.
