Chinese Mushroom Found to Boost Fitness

Scientists have discovered an ancient Chinese remedy based on a wild mushroom can improve health and fitness for sedentary, middle-aged people.

In a trial involving 130 volunteers, the remedy, based on fermented extracts of Chinese cordyceps mushroom, or caterpillar fungus, proved effective in increasing aerobic fitness.

The volunteers were aged between 40 and 70 and were monitored for lung capacity, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure during and after short bouts of vigorous exercise and endurance walks.

In China, the mushroom is still prescribed as an aphrodisiac and a treatment for the elderly to ease general aches and pains.

Chinese doctors also claim it boosts immunity to infections and can help fight respiratory illnesses.
