Hao Cleared for Sheffield United Move

Veteran Chinese star Hao Haidong's much anticipated move to Sheffield United has finally been confirmed by the championship outfit.

The 34-year-old Dalian Shide stalwart received the necessary international clearance for the switch Friday and, according to vice chairman Terry Robinson, is now expected to join Neil Warnock's promotion hopefuls in two to three weeks.

"We have worked tremendously hard on this deal and are pleased that we have now got the green light to bring Hao over here," Robinson said.

"We now have a transfer agreement, signed contracts, a work permit and international clearance. Hao is just waiting for a visa to give him UK residency, which will be granted after the Chinese New Year."

Although the precise details of Hao's contract have yet to be released, it is thought he will combine a coaching role at United's academy with his playing duties before eventually returning to China to work at Sheffield's thriving academy on the island of Hainan.

Hao, who featured in all three of his country's games at the 2002 World Cup finals, will add a steely extra dimension to the Blades who, as well as eyeing a return to the Premiership, are gunning for FA Cup glory following their Fourth Round draw with West Ham United at the weekend.

Officials at the Yorkshire side are also hopeful that by securing the services of the Qingdao born striker, the team's profile in China and throughout the rest of Asia will be significantly raised.

Never far from controversy throughout his illustrious career, Hao Haidong will be keen to mirror the success enjoyed by fellow England based Chinese stars Li Tie and Sun Jihai.
