Beijing Opera Staged in HKSAR to Celebrate National Day
A Beijing opera was staged in the Hong Kong Cultural Center Monday evening to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The opera "Silang (the fourth son) Visiting His Mother", one of the most popular repertory pieces on the Beijing operatic stage, was presented by the Hong Kong communities of Jiangsu province, Zhejiang province and Shanghai.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong GaoSiren were among those who attended the opening ceremony of the opera.

In the magazine issued to accompany the opera, W. P. Tam, deputy director of the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR in Beijing remarked that Hong Kong hopes to introduce to international friends the 200 year-old cultural heritage of Beijing opera in the highest standard.
