Adjust font size:

The Shanghai portion of the global 24-hour Live Earth concerts will be held at the square in front of the Oriental Pearl Tower on July 7.

Proposed by former the US Vice President Al Gore, the music event aims to promote awareness about global warming and what people can do to save energy. The concerts will begin in Sydney and continue across the globe including shows in London, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Tokyo and conclude in New Jersey.

The concerts will be broadcast on NBC in the US and on more than 120 networks around the world. They are expected to reach a mass audience of more than two billion people through television, film, radio and the Internet.

The shows will feature more than 100 artists. Nearly 40 artists have already confirmed. The list includes Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, James Blunt and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in London, while Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Roger Waters, Kelly Clarkson and The Police will take the stage in New Jersey.

Local promoter Shanghai Oriental Pearl Live Nation Entertainment and Sports Co Ltd said that Sarah Brightman is the only artist confirmed to perform in Shanghai thus far.

The company plans to invite five to seven international acts to Shanghai. Several Chinese artists will join them. A confirmed list of artists will be released next week.

Less than 3,000 tickets will be sold to cover costs.
