Commemorated on 5 June since 1972, World Environment Day (WED) is targeted to be the people's day for positive action and demonstrates how individual actions can create an exponential impact.

Now WED activities take place all year round but climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Brazil, the country with the highest biodiversity, will host World Environment Day in 2012. The 2012 theme for is Green Economy: Does it include you?

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (dubbed Rio+20) will also take place in Brazil from 20-22 June 2012. Rio+20, as the name suggests, marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

India is named as global host of World Environment Day 2011, themed with "Forests-Nature At Your Service."
