3 dead, 5 missing after typhoon hits Japan

A powerful typhoon made a landfall in Japan with torrential rain and gusts hitting wide parts of the country, leaving three people dead and five others missing, according to local media on Tuesday.
Man-yi, the 18th typhoon of this year, landed shortly before 8 a.m. Monday near Toyohashi in the central Japan prefecture of Aichi, triggered the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue emergency warnings on heavy rain in Kyoto, Shiga and Fukui prefectures.
Local police said that a senior woman was found dead in mudslide Sunday midnight in Ritto, Shiga prefecture, according to local media.
Another senior female died also due to landslide in Mihama in Fukui prefecture and the third death was reported in the northeast prefecture of Iwate, Japan's Kyodo News reported early Tuesday.
A man is still missing after being swept away in rivers in Fukushima prefecture and the whereabouts of a woman and her daughter in Mie prefecture remained unknown, said Kyodo, adding two women were also missing in Iwate.
More than 110 people were injured due to the disaster in 21 prefectures. And over 550 buildings were damaged in some of the prefectures, according to local reports.
According to JMA, precipitation during 48 hours through Monday morning reached around 300 millimeters in parts of the cities of Kyoto and Otsu, surpassing monthly averages for September. It topped 500 mm in parts of Mie and Nara prefectures.
More than 320,000 households across the country on Monday were informed to take measures to evacuate to safe places due to the typhoon.
