The continually deteriorated situation of Syria finally turned for the better. The Government of Syria sent a letter to Kofi Annan, joint special envoy of the United Union and the League of Arab States on Syrian crisis on March 27, 2012 and said that they were willing to accept the six-point peace proposals put forward by Annan.

A political solution to the crisis of Syria is at a critical moment and each side should cherish the opportunity brought by the good offices of Annan. They should curb the spread and upgrade of violent conflicts with their sincere desire and practical actions and create conditions for effective and comprehensive cease-fire.

Annan's mediation fruit was hardly earned. On March 4, 2012, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China announced six-point proposals on the cessation of violent conflicts, dialogue and humanitarian rescue, emphasized their support of the positive efforts made by the Arab countries and the League of Arab States on promotion of political solution to the crisis and maintenance of the unity of the United Nations Security Council. On Mar. 21, 2012, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement to fully support the mediation of Annan and approve of the six-point proposals on solution of Syrian crisis, in which there are a lot of contents consistent with opinions of China.

The peace efforts of the United Nations need experienced diplomats like Annan and unanimous voice of the members of the Security Council. The facts proved that only by adhering to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations in dealing with the internal conflicts like the Syrian crisis can the power of the United Nations be effectively demonstrated.

Implementation of the proposals put forward by Annan still faces serious challenges. Some external forces have not given up the goal of replacing the current regime of Syria. They increased support for the reactionaries overtly or covertly and continued to look for opportunities for a solution through the use of force. Syrian parties should be cognizant that the proposals of Annan aimed at creating an atmosphere for the long-term peace in Syria. Active implementation of these proposals not only maintains the authority of the United Nations but more in line with the well-being of the Syrian people. Syrian parties should cease fire under the supervision of the United Nations as soon as possible and promote the political process led by the Syrian people with the special envoy.

China supports the good offices made by Annan and is willing to make unremitting efforts with the international community for the realization of political solution of Syrian issue as soon as possible.
