Rand Paul: Too radical for America

Sen. Rand Paul

It's impossible to say who is the most dishonest politician. There are too many good choices, and the most dishonest politicians are often the hardest to find, anyway. If they're good at it, then you won't know they are lying.

The politicians who are bad at lying are easy to spot. They're right there on cable news or in print spewing transparent contradictions. When Sen. Rand Paul went on CNN in March 2013 to discuss his proposed anti-abortion Life at Conception Act, he responded to the host's first question by saying, "I don't think we're in any real rush towards new legislation."

This is Rand Paul's approach to controversial questions across the spectrum. Unlike his father, Ron Paul, who would go on CNN and unapologetically defend his radical positions, Rand Paul will run from in an instant in order to try to win votes.

Rand Paul hasn't announced his presidential campaign yet, as of Jan. 19, but all the signs are there that he is running. Paul this week hired strategist Chip Englander, who is fresh off helping a Republican to a surprise victory in the Illinois governor's race. His PAC has been taking shots at Bush and Huckabee, and he himself attacked expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as unsuitable for the office. He just won the endorsement of talk radio host Alex Jones.

Crackpots and crazy positions

Many of the Paul family's supporters hold extreme views that the government has few legitimate powers or believe in conspiracy theories and racially charged views. Ron Paul, who ran for president three times and spent 22 years in Congress, used to publish a racist newsletter, and now he runs the Ron Paul Institute, an organization that advances 9/11 Truthism and other conspiracy theories. Jeb Bush isn't the only candidate whose family name will prove to be a burden. Moreover, Rand Paul has relied on many of the same supporters and had his ideology colored much by Ron's.
