2. 2005 UEFA Champions League Final- the "Miracle of Istanbul"

The contest pitted Liverpool of England against Italy's Milan at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey on May 25.

Milan was regarded as favorite and took the lead within the first minute thanks to team captain Paolo Maldini. Later, striker Hernán Crespo added two more goals before halftime to make it 3–0—Liverpool appeared outclassed.

But in the second half, Liverpool launched a stunning comeback, scoring three goals in six minutes to level it at 3–3, the goals coming from Steven Gerrard, Vladimír Šmicer and Xabi Alonso. Extra time failed to produce a winner, so the match went to a shootout.

Liverpool led 3–2 when its goalkeeper, Jerzy Dudek, saved a shot from Milan's Andriy Shevchenko. Liverpool won its fifth European Cup and claimed the UEFA Badge of Honor in the process. The match became known as the "Miracle of Istanbul."
