The 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan will be accessible to everyone. Those who did not manage to buy tickets for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games or to the sporting venues will be able to see the Universiade on TV. The channels Eurosport, Rossiya 2 and TNV have scheduled daily broadcasts of the World University Games, in a manner that is usually done only for the Olympics. The Games will be broadcast in 105 countries. The experts are promising that the quality of the "picture" will be unprecedented for national sports television.
For the first time in the history of the World University Games, in Kazan, the broadcast of the Games will be carried out simultaneously in 105 countries. The Games will be shown by three Russian TV companies and 13 international media.
The Eurosport channel has scheduled more than 80 hours of live broadcasts. Of the 27 sports represented at the Universiade, emphasis will be placed on the swimming, diving, volleyball, athletics, weightlifting, gymnastics, basketball, and rowing, as well as boating and canoeing.
Dmitry Anisimov, Head of Sports Programmes at the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK), also admitted that for their network of channels, the upcoming Universiade will feature the most illuminated broadcasts of all time. "The Universiade has never been shown on VGTRK channels like this before," says Anisimov.
On July 6, the Universiade will occupy 80% of the total air time on VGTRK channels, and from 7 to 17 July broadcasts will be taking place from morning till evening. The Elite Sport programme, according to Anisimov, during the Universiade will increase its running time from 20 minutes to one hour, and will focus on the coverage of events of the World University Games.
"Our new project, the Elite Sport programme will become the main platform for coverage and discussion of all the events of the Universiade, which we have been showing during the last month. In everyday operations, it will be focused just on the World University Games. We will start with a morning game and summarise the events of the day at 23:00,” says Dmitry. “We will try to attract a variety of experts to conduct a thorough broadcasting, doing live coverage of Kazan right from the scene," he said. The main channel in the network of VGTRK will be Rossiya 2, which will be broadcasting in approximately the same format as the Olympics are broadcast. "We will also employ our satellite channels Sport 1 and Fight Club,” said Dmitry Anisimov.
The Opening Ceremony will be held at the 45,000-seat Kazan Arena Stadium on 6 July, and tickets for this have already been sold out. Those who did not manage to get tickets will be able to see the live broadcast of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in full on the Rossiya 1 channel – these should be the main event of the Universiade," said Dmitry Anisimov.
Tatarstan's leading TV channel, the Tatarstan-Novy Vek (TNV), will also cover the Universiade every day. It will daily broadcast the Diary of the Universiade programme, with the participation of the best athletes and VIP guests of the Games, and from 10:00 to 12:00 and in the evening from 18:00 to 21:00, it will be broadcast live sporting events – at least five hours of live broadcasts every day. TNV will also show the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Universiade for the regional audience. Special broadcasts about the Universiade will also be provided during news reports and in the Good Morning programme.
Vasily Kiknadze, General Director of Panorama, who is in charge of the TV coverage of the Universiade in Kazan, told RBK-Tatarstan that in showing the Universiade, they will employ about 270 cameras and 12 OB vans and mobile broadcasting complexes, as well as more than 850 operating in directing staff. Broadcasting the Games and other events of the Universiade will take place in HD1080p format. “This entire complex is brand new and state-of-the-art. There is plenty of special camera equipment: modern time-lapse photography cameras allowing the shooting at 800 frames per second, RobyCam spider cameras which are among the best hanging cameras in their category.
We also have a new set of virtual graphics that we are going to use during the broadcast,” Kiknadze said and assured us that both the staff and the equipment are “absolutely ready for the Games and look forward to their start.” The work in organising television broadcasts will be performed at the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) – a temporary structure specifically created for the Universiade in the territory of Kazan Arena Football Stadium.
