Li Na of China returns a shot to Olga Govortsova of Belarus during their 2013 US Open women's single match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, on August 26, 2013 in New York.

Li Na retired from tennis in 2002 due to burnout from excessive training and the use of steroid pills, according to an interview by the New York Times.

According to the New York Times, "the burnout from excessive training, the outrage at her coaches' attempts to squelch her romance with a male teammate named Jiang Shan, the debilitating period that the head coach insisted she play through, overruling a doctor's recommendations, by taking steroid pills, to which she was allergic" were all reasons behind the decision.

Li, who is now back and competing in the US Open, also talked about her family, her coach and China's "national sports system" in the interview.
