The Southwest Economic Rim, originally conceived in 1984, is an economic region centered on Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality. It mainly incorporates Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet and Guangxi. Geographically speaking, the region covers more than 3.2 million square kilometers, accounting for about 33 percent of the country's total land area. The geographical location of this region greatly facilitates its trade with South and Southeast Asian countries. Mostly made up of mountainous areas this region is abundant in natural resources as well as tourism destinations.

Amid China's efforts to expand domestic demand to counteract the global financial crisis, the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Belt formed in 2009 and was approved by the central government this year. This belt will become the hub in the northern part of this economic rim, focusing on state-of-the-art equipment manufacturing, modern services sector, new technology, and agricultural products. The Yunnan Central Economic Belt, centered around the province's capital city of Kunming, is an important transport hub which has established close cooperation ties with South Asian countries. The Beibu Gulf Economic Region, the only gateway to the sea for this area, serves as an important link to Southeast Asian countries, and has contributed to rapid development in the region since 2008.
