First proposed in 2009, the Cross-Straits Economic Rim is an economic region covering southern Zhejiang Province, eastern Guangdong, central and eastern Jiangxi, and the entirety of Fujian Province and Taiwan. A total of more than 20 cities, including the coastal cities of Xiamen, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Wenzhou and Shantou are included. It is being built to enhance the economic cooperation between Taiwan and the mainland, especially the four provinces to the west of the Taiwan Strait. It's expected to be another engine for the country's economic growth.

This region has a population of about 60-80 million. The Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone has already been established to boost the economic and trade cooperation across the Straits. The Gulei Petrochemical Base in Zhangzhou City, Fujian is also under construction with the aim of meeting energy demands in this region. In 2010, the trade volume between the mainland and Taiwan reached US$145 billion, a 36.9 percent increase year-on-year, while Fujian reported a record-high US$10 billion in trade with Taiwan, doubling trade levels in 2005.
