 Hammer Price: US$38.26 million

"Venice, a View of the Rialto Bridge, Looking North, from the Fondamenta del Carbon", hammered for US$38.26 million on July 6 at Sotheby's London. The oil sketch of Venice's Grand Canal, 115cm x 199.5cm, is one of the four similar works completed in the late 1760s by Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), an Italian painter of veduta. The four works are generally recognized as Guardi's greatest masterpieces.
