Ghana was the world's joint-eighth biggest gold producer in 2011 along with Indonesia. The country produced 100 tonnes of gold in 2011, a 22 percent increase compared to 2010. Ghana is Africa's second largest gold producer, trailing only South Africa. Its economy is heavily dependent on exports of cocoa and gold. Gold accounts for more than 90 percent of its total mineral exports. Its gold production has maintained steady growth over the past few years. Its gold resources are mainly concentrated in its northwestern, western and southwestern regions.
