The Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Caves, are located 25 km southeast of Dunhuang, Gansu province. A total of 492 caves built across five levels are preserved, containing more than 2,000 painted sculptures and approximately 45,000 square meters of murals. The caves are situated at an important crossroad on the Silk Road, and had a significant influence on religion, trade and culture.
