"Go along and take a walk deep into the hutong. You will find places interesting and prosperous,"said Wang Wenzhuo, 70, who has lived in Wudaoying hutong for 20 years. She regularly volunteers as a watch keeper over her neighborhood, accompanied by a 40-year-old Chinese parasol tree standing guard over the entrance. The tree itself is as old as the hutong.

But Wudaoying is not one to visit for history; the attractions of this lane are the shops and cafes created by the young and vigorous. "A few more shops are being built and are about to open for business. Soon it'll be even busier,"Wang said, eyes crinkling in a smile as she pointed the way.
