2. On the hutong catwalk
Dong Liang is the newborn of the hutong; it's been in business for less than three weeks. One of the three co-owners, Wang Yao, who also models the collections in Dong Liang, said, "We want the name to be manly and strong. 'Dong liang' means 'ridgepole', and also means a man of great ability. That fits our ambition."
Dong Liang is a clothing showroom for local designers' latest collections. Wang and his partners regularly contact young and talented designers they admire to talk about what they should have. Currently, the autumn/winter collections of three designers are in stock: Liu2 (named after the husband in a designing couple), Hong Yan (named after a famous Chinese designer's name, Li Hongyan) and (Na) too. A green woolen coat from the Hong Yan collection, priced at 3,588 yuan, is the most expensive item currently on sale. Wang is planning a customer catwalk fashion show in two weeks to showcase the store's new collections. "People can come and try on the clothes for the show,"Wang said. "But we'll try to save this 3,588 yuan piece for the ladies."
The second floor includes a sofa and guitar, bookshelves and wine, but don't confuse it for the handsome owner's bachelor pad. This is a place for designers and friends to hold salons. It's easy to imagine young, innovative designers expressing their fashion ideas while drinking wine and playing music here.
