China's Danxia Landform has become the nation's 8th World Natural Heritage after it was listed on the World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee at the 34th meeting in Brazil on August 1.

The six areas are Chishui in Guizhou Province, Taining in Fujian Province, Langshan Mountain in Hunan Province, Danxia Mountain in Guangdong Province, Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi Province and Jianglang Mountain in Zhejiang Province.

The development of Danxia landforms have undergone different stages of geomorphic cyclical erosion in the form of weathering, collapse, transportation, sedimentation and other processes, together with the "sculpture" of external forces mainly tectonic uplift.

Also called Chinese Redstone Park, Danxia Mountain in Shaoguan City in north-central Guangdong is a world famous geological park. China has the world’s largest area of Danxia, or redstone geomorphology, in the world, the majority of which is found on this mountain.

The mountain is formed from a reddish sandstone that has eroded over time into a series of mountains surrounded by cliffs and many unusual rock formations (Danxia Landform).

The scenic area contains more than 680 stone peaks, stone fortresses, walls, pillars and stone bridges. Many stones take the shape of the human body, birds and animals.

Local signs describe it as a world famous UNESCO geopark of China. More than 600,000 tourists visit the mountain each year. Tourists can also take a boat trip on a river winding through the mountains.

Transport: Take a train from Shenzhen Railway Station to Shaoguan City, then take a sightseeing bus to Danxia Mountain. The whole trip takes less than six hours.

Accommodation: Hostels at the foot of the mountain cost 80 to 100 yuan per night. Or you can camp on the mountain if you are keen on sunrises.
