Turpan Karezes, Xinjiang

The Turpan water system is locally called karez water system in the Turpan Depression, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The word karez means "well" in Uyghur language. It has been listed as one of the three greatest water projects of ancient China together with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and the Jinghang Grand Canal. The well system was crucial in Turpan's development as an important oasis stopover on the ancient Silk Road skirting the barren and hostile Taklamakan Desert.
