In 1983, a little store in Singapore stocked with handpicked art and design books opened to the public. So popular was this little stopover for designers, artists, and book lovers that the store has grown into a multi-national Asian chain with aesthetically pleasing shelves and a wide range of books. The rapidly growing brand recently entered Beijing with the opening of Page One's China World Mall branch in April, much to the benefit of Beijing's thriving art and design scene.
Despite Page One's Beijing location in a less-traveled corner of the China World Mall's Summit Wing, plenty of readers have found their way to the shop's well-stocked shelves. The inventory here is wide and covers both English and Chinese titles.

Hot sellers and eye-catching features surround shoppers as they enter the store, but those are just the tip of the iceberg. Rows of chocolate-hued wooden bookcases hold a range of topics impressive for a Beijing bookstore. Children's books in both languages are popular buys, especially the language learning category. Young adult readers and the recently popular vampire novels are surprisingly well-supplied. Adult books cover all topics from classic novels to professional development, and even religion, science, and philosophy.
Page One's specialty, art and design books, enjoy an elevated status; the raised platform in the back of the store harbors a colorful collection ranging from architecture and urban design to fashion design and even fine art in both English and Chinese. "Our target customers are architects and designers, and those who want to study these subjects," store manager Sally Sun explained.

Many of the art and design books sold at the store are published by Page One's own publishing house, Page One Publishing. The publishing house was born of Page One CEO Mark Tan's passion for design and architecture books and serves to introduce these books originating in Asia to a worldwide audience.
