To better serve the city's art-lover population, another branch is opening in the 798 Art District soon. The chain is also popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand; more Page One bookstores are being planned for several other cities on the Chinese mainland.
While there's no reading area or café, shoppers seem to be content getting lost in a book while standing in the aisles.
Sally Sun notes that the store doesn't directly compete with online sales. "We don't have an online bookstore," she said. "I think that our target customers are not the same as online bookstores; they want the experience of a real bookstore."
"Our store is very quiet and the environment is tidy. It's calm and relaxing," Sun continued. Indeed, the ability to leisurely browse through books without being hassled is one of the store's advantages.
Because many other book suppliers in Beijing offer a more limited range of books, Page One deepens the local market, serving the creative, book-loving crowd looking for the traditional bookstore experience.
