Mount Xumi Grottoes Museum opens for public

A new museum housing a major display of Buddhist grottoes from the ancient Silk Road opened on April 13th. in the city of Guyuan, in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region .

The Mount Xumi Grotto Museum cost 30 million yuan ($4.6 million) to build. The 5,580-square-meter building has five pavilions representing the center of universe and the four continents. Mount Xumi, also known as Sumeru, is regarded in Buddhism as the center of the world, surrounded by continents

The Mount Xumi Grottoes, on the eastern section of the Silk Road, were submitted by China as a candidate for World Heritage Status in 2008.
