The original story of Cui Yingying and Zhang Sheng was first told as a short story written by Yuan Zhen, a famous poet in Tang Dynasty. This version was called the Story of Yingying. It differs from the later play in that Zhang Sheng ultimately breaks from Yingying, and does not ask for her hand.
Perhaps bowing to popular sentiment, Wang Shifu changed the tragic ending into a happy one.
Since its appearance in the thirteenth century, the play has enjoyed unparalleled popularity. It has given rise to innumerable sequels, parodies and rewritings; The play has also influenced countless plays, short stories and novels.
There have already been many versions of the play in Shaoxing Opera, and Hean Yu opera. However this new version, called the Dadu version of Kunqu Opera, claims to be closest to the original in terms of the storyline.
The Kunqu opera combines fashion, aesthetics and poetry. The stage is covered with glass, under which float rose petals. Fast-tempo and graceful music also add a modern flavor.
Prior to the play's premiere, a spectacular "fashion" show drew the public's attention to the costume designs of the play. Lead actors strutted down the catwalk with the Tang-style dresses and robes.
The new version of Kunqu opera "The Romance of the West Chamber" will debut on November 11th. Audiences who have a passion for opera can go to the Poly Theatre and enjoy this timeless tale.
