Ballet adapted to Chinese tastes

Zhang Dandan, the artistic director of Guangzhou Ballet Company, said the choreography has overcome its share of challenges in transforming the story of a Peking Opera artist into a ballet.

Zhang Dandan, the artistic director of Guangzhou Ballet Company, said, "The play sounded like a crazy idea to many at first. Questions were raised over how to integrate Peking Opera into ballet and whether a female or a male dancer should be cast as Mei Lanfang. By addressing these problems, 'Mei Lanfang' offers innovative solutions to localizing the art of ballet."
