US banks to repay bailout money
Adjust font size:

The US Treasury Department has approved 10 of the nation's largest banks to repay 68 billion dollars in government bailout money.

Eight banks that took the bail out money and last month passed government "stress tests" confirmed that they received permission to repay the bailout funds.

The banks include JPMorgan Chase and American Express. Morgan Stanley did not pass the test, but on Tuesday said it had raised enough capital quickly and was approved to repay the money.

Some say it's a sign of financial recovery, while others say the banks have been eager to get out of the program to escape government restrictions such as caps on executive compensation.
