Long awaited win for Sharapova
Adjust font size:

Russia's Maria Sharapova, the 2004 women's champion, won a long-awaited victory, beating qualifier Viktoriya Kutuzova 7-5, 6-4. Sharapova is continuing her comeback following shoulder surgery last October, and talked about it after the match.

Maria Sharapova said, "You know, it's funny because sometimes I'll be in the middle of a match and I'll find myself thinking like about the progression of the shoulder and how it is feeling. Obviously that's because I haven't played in so long and the shoulder has just been the focus of so many areas on a daily basis for the last couple of years. So I also think it's just a matter of forgetting about it and just playing."
