China's sacred Mount Wutai has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape. The number of natural and mixed world heritage sites on UNESCO's list in China now stands at 38.

The announcement was made at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee in the Spanish city of Seville. Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province is the highest mountain in northern China.

Its temples represent the history of Buddhist architectural development and have influenced palace building in China for more than a thousand years. The Committee is expected to add additional sites to its list from 37 nominations later Friday and Saturday, including China's Mount Songshan.
