It marked China's first medal in the women's walk event in world championship history. The silver went to Olive Loughnane from the Republic of Ireland.

Liu Hong, 2km Walk Bronze Medlist, said, "I was in at the leading position at the start. I kept my own pace throughout the whole race. Other athletes began to speed up in the second half of the race. I also changed my rhythm to match the pace."

The women's 800 meters provided another dramatic moment:

As the race going into the final 200m, Kenya's Janeth Jepkosgei fell to the ground and instantly lost the chance to defend her title. Caster Semenya of South Africa recovered to win the heat, but hurt her ankle in the collision with Jepkosgei and could also miss out on Wednesday's final.

But there was good news for Valerie Vili of New Zealand, successfully defending her world title in the Women's Shot Putt. Vili confirmed an expected victory with a penultimate effort of 20.44 metres.

Another gold medal came from Britain's Jessica Ennis. She comfortably won the Heptathlon, but missed out on breaking compatriot Denise Lewis' British record set at the Sydney Olympics.
