Tension on the Korean peninsula

South Korea and its northern neighbor, the DPRK, have exchanged fire in waters off the west coast of the divided Korean Peninsula on November 23, 2010. It's seen as the most severe exchange of fire in nearly 6 decades.

The incident happened near the contentious sea border called the Northern Limit Line. Two South Korean marines and two civilians were killed, and 16 others were wounded.

Tensions are running high on the Korean Peninsula.

On November 28, South Korea and the United States launched a four-day joint naval drill in tense waters west of the divided Korean Peninsula. The drills come despite the current tension between South Korea and the DPRK.
