China welcomes the new treaty reached between the United States and Russia on nuclear disarmament, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in Beijing on Tuesday.

The United States and Russia finalized a new nuclear disarmament deal last Friday to replace the expired Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), agreeing to reduce their deployed nuclear warheads by 30 percent to 1,550.

Qin said the agreement between Russia and the United States to substantially cut their nuclear arsenals in a verifiable and irreversible manner would pave the way for the comprehensive and thorough nuclear disarmament in the end, Qin said.

He said China always advocated comprehensive ban on and complete destruction of nuclear weapons. "China would like to work with the international community to push for nuclear disarmament and preserve world peace and stability with unremitting efforts."
