China said Tuesday that it has not changed stance on the Iranian nuclear issue, calling for more diplomatic efforts to pursue proper settlement of the issue.

"We will continue to work with all parties towards the solution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic and peaceful means," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular news briefing.

The United States and Western allies have long been accusing Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program, and are discussing a United Nations resolution to impose sanctions.

Iran has denied the accusation and stressed its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.

China has maintained there is still room for diplomatic efforts on the nuclear issue, and stood against sanctions.

"China has not changed its stance on the Iranian nuclear issue. We insist on safeguarding international nuclear non-proliferation regime, and we also take into account regional peace and stability," said Qin.

Qin said China opposed Iran having nuclear weapons, but Iran, as a sovereign nation, had the right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program.

"Under current circumstances, we hope relevant parties can show flexibility and make efforts for a solution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomacy," Qin said.
