Several dozens of protestors were detained as they held Saturday in downtown Lisbon an anti-NATO march during a summit of the 28-nation bloc, police authorities said.

Protestors, who held anti-NATO banners and yelled slogans, traveled along the main streets in the city in a peaceful way, without outbreak of violent incidents. But some 40 were still detained as they were seen holding up a road to the meeting venue.

About 10,000 people, most of them reportedly from the trade unions in Portugal, took part in the protest, police said.

NATO leaders gathered in Lisbon on Friday and Saturday for talks on major issues such as the alliance's future Afghanistan strategy and its establishing of a missile defense system in Europe.
