U.S.: Gaddafi's isolation grows 'more extreme'

The White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday that the isolation of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi "grows more extreme" day by day, as the country's rebels are pushing toward Tripoli.

"I think it's becoming increasingly clear that Qaddafi's days are numbered," Carney told reporters during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One, adding that the U.S. believed that the people of Libya "His isolation grows more extreme as each day passes", Carney said, adding that Libyan people "deserve the right to choose their own future."

"We have obviously done a lot to support their efforts to ensure that Qaddafi's regime no longer had the capacity or has the capacity to attack the Libyan people," he continued.

Libya's opposition forces on Saturday won control of the town of Zawiyah, 30 miles (about 48 kilometers) west of Tripoli, the Libyan capital still under the government's control. Zawiyah, located on the main highway from the capital to Tunisia, has been a lifeline for the Libyan government.

Gaddafi on Monday called on his followers to "go to the front always, to the fights, to the weapons, to the battles to liberate Libya inch by inch from the traitors and the NATO. Be ready to fight to liberate our sweet land."

Gaddafi made the call amid rumors that he was about to leave the country for exile.
