The death toll from the earthquake which hit Sikkim has risen to at least 98 in India, including 80 in Sikkim, as 20 more bodies were recovered Wednesday. |
The Indian government also said that around 400 foreigners, most of them tourists, have been stranded in northern Sikkim, the worst hit area in the quake.
A total of 700 houses have collapsed as a result of the quake and local authorities estimate the loss at hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars.
Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling urged the central government to grant a special package aid, saying the loss from the quake will be not less than 100 billion rupees (two billion U. S. dollars).
"We are trying to assess the (exact) loss. We will do it in about 10 days and will submit a report and ask for a special package from the center," Chamling told the media.
The chief minister also announced compensation of 500,000 rupees (10,000 U.S. dollars) to the kin of each of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (1,000 U.S. dollars) to the seriously injured.
