Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi vowed to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations (UN) in multiple fields during a Wednesday meeting with a UN official.

"China will continue to maintain the authority and function of the UN in various fields, including politics, economics and social activities," Yang said.

He said that multi-polarization and economic globalization have developed profoundly. Faced with unsteady and uncertain elements, we should insist on multilateralism in order to strengthen the function of the UN and properly tackle global problems, he added.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Kasymzhomart Tokaev, who is also director-general of the UN office in Geneva, spoke highly of the achievements that China has made in its economic and social development, as well as the contributions China has made to the UN.

He also expressed an expectation for China to play a bigger role on the multilateral stage, as well as willingness to enhance China-UN communication and cooperation.

On Oct. 25, 1971, the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 and decided to restore the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN.
