At least 67 people died and 288 others injured in traffic accidents in Turkey during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha as of Wednesday afternoon, local newspaper Today's Zaman reported Wednesday.

Some eight people were reported dead on Sunday, the first day of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, while 39 others were injured, according to the report posted by the newspaper on its website.

Another 15 people died Monday in traffic accidents while 16 were killed Tuesday. The number of injured reached 65 and 68 respectively.

Turkish officials said they expected more congested intercity traffic on Thursday, calling on drivers not to sit behind the wheel if they are sleepy or tired and to obey traffic rules and avoid speeding.

More than 100 people were killed and 800 others injured during last year's Eid al-Adha holiday.
