From the death of a fruit seller which sparked protests in Tunisia at the end of 2010 and into 2011, to continuous demonstrations in Syria in December, the past year has been one of turbulence and upheaval in the Middle East and North Africa. The protests led to power shifts which many would have thought unimaginable even months before: Tunisia's then President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted. Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is currently standing trial. Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh was forced to hand over power. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed by rebel forces. And Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is facing an uncertain future.
