G77, China face 'arduous task' to promote development

The Group of 77 and China (G77+ China) faces the arduous task of promoting and implementing the international development agenda in 2012 against the backdrop of the fragile world economic recovery, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Wednesday.
Li Baodong, Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York, where Argentina handed over the G77 chairmanship to Algeria.
"The new year is fraught with challenges and difficulties," Li said. "With the world economic recovery still fragile, developing countries have to grapple with multiple crises. The G77 and China faces the arduous task of promoting and implementing the international development agenda."
Putting forward his recommendations for further cooperation among G77 countries, Li said the biggest problem facing international development efforts is lack of implementation.
He urged developed countries to "honor their commitments by increasing financial support, technological transfer and capacity building to the developing countries."
"We should make means of implementation a core task for Rio+20 and push for an action-oriented, balanced and pragmatic outcome of the conference," he added, referring to the conference slated for June in Brazil.
Meanwhile, he urged the international community to " comprehensively assess progress and gaps, carefully sum up lessons learned, firmly uphold the principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities,' always place poverty eradication at the top of the international development agenda, promote the deepening of the reform of the international economic and financial system, and safeguard the important role of the United Nations in the global economic governance."
Unity and self-reliance to achieve common development is another highlight of his speech. He called for South-South cooperation based on equality, mutual benefit and mutual trust in order to "advance our common development", and strengthen coordination and cooperation in important multilateral negotiations.
He pledged that China will strengthen coordination and cooperation with the G77 in the New Year.
"The Chinese government will continue to contribute 40,000 U.S. dollars to support the work of the office of the Chairman and the Secretariat of the G77," he said.
G77 was established on June 15, 1964 by 77 developing countries signatories of the "Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries" issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
G77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which provides the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the UN system, and promote South-South cooperation for development.
