Unidentified gunmen on Sunday shot dead a judge and the general attorney of the northwestern province of Idlib in Syria, the state-run SANA news agency reported.

The armed group targeted the officials' car in which they were heading to work, killing Idlib's General Attorney Nidal Ghasal and Judge Mohammad Ziadeh along with their driver, according to SANA.

The northwestern province of Idlib, on borders with Turkey, has emerged as one of the hotbeds of armed insurgency against the Syrian government forces.

Syria has accused Turkey of supporting armed groups in the northern region by giving refuge to armed groups and providing them with arms.

The Syrian government has blamed the unrest in Syria on plots by terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs and said more than 2, 000 army and security personnel were killed during the past months, while the UN put the death toll in the Syrian unrest at around 6, 000.
