A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday that China hopes negotiations for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol will be completed at the year-end Conference of the Parties meeting in Doha.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin made the remark at a regular press briefing when asked to comment on the 13th meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Clean Energy and Climate in Italy.

Environmental representatives from the world's largest economies gathered in Rome Tuesday for talks on clean energy and climate change.

The meeting, co-hosted by the United States and Italy, is the first full-scale international gathering since the Dec. 11 conclusion of climate change talks in Durban, South Africa.

China brought a high-level delegation to the talks, led by Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission.

Liu said the meeting acted as a helpful supplement for international climate change talks and played a positive role in deepening mutual understanding among different parties.

China has always believed that the fight against climate change requires the cooperation of international society, he said.

Although positive progress was made at the Durban conference, negotiations on the Bali Roadmap have yet to be finished, while the implementation of the Cancun Agreements and the Durban conference consensus still need more time, he noted.

He said China hopes developed countries will demonstrate political sincerity, reduce greater amounts of emissions and honor their commitment to transfer technology and funds to developing countries.
