Fijian parents prostituting their children in local communities are growing in numbers and becoming an emerging trend in the Pacific island nation, said the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre on Monday.

These revelations were made to the women organization through their community outreach programs, said the center's coordinator Shamima Ali.

According to Ali, the children being prostituted by their parents do so to support their families and are underage with the youngest victim being only 10 years old.

Earlier, local media have reported that prostitution in Fiji was close to spiraling out of control, with a new breed of girls choosing to offer casual sex in return for quick cash to buy " luxury" items.

Some teenagers, including street kids, teenage mothers or those from very poor backgrounds, have admitted to prostituting themselves to feed consumer habits, saying their own families were not aware they traded time with their bodies for cash.

In the capital city of Suva, the girls say many prayer groups approach them throughout the night but it's hard for them to turn away from prostitution because they were experiencing some benefits from this oldest trade in the world.

It is indeed becoming a bigger problem for the state as many people have lost their jobs and have turned to prostitution for money.
