17 militants killed in gov't building attack in S. Afghanistan

At least 17 militants have been killed in an overnight attack on government office buildings in Registan district of southern Afghan province of Kandahar, authorities said Thursday.
"A group of militants, numbered dozens of armed men, launched an attack against district compound in Registan at around 2 a.m. local time Thursday, sparking a three-hour gunbattle that left 17 militants dead," administrative chief of the district, Abdul Khaliq Ayoubi, told Xinhua.
He said the members of Afghan National Police professionally responded to the attack as the security forces were on alert and were aware about the attacks earlier.
He also confirmed that an ALP police officer was only wounded in the fighting in the district bordering Pakistan in the province some 450 km south of Afghan capital Kabul.
The Taliban insurgents, who have been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, have yet to make comments.
The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual spring offensive against Afghan and NATO- led troops stationed in the country.
In a separate development, two police officers were wounded when a landmine planted by the militants struck their car in Ghazni city, the provincial capital of eastern Ghazni province 100 km south of Kabul earlier Thursday.
The seriously wounded cops were shifted to a NATO-led forces' hospital in Ghazni, deputy provincial police chief Mohammad Hassan told Xinhua.
Up to 10 Afghan security forces were killed in a Taliban ambush in Herat province 640 km west of Kabul on Tuesday.
