3 killed, 29 injured in Myanmar earthquake

At least three people were killed, 29 injured and four went missing in Sunday morning's 6.8-magnitude strong earthquake that struck northern part of Myanmar, state TV said in a breaking news in the afternoon.
Of the three victims, two are from Kyauk Myaung in Sagaing region and one is from Singu in Mandalay region.
Two of them, a man and a woman, were pressed to death by falling brick wall, while the rest, a man, met with the mishap when a bridge collapsed due to shock.
The Ayayawaddy-river-crossing bridge, Yadana Theinka, under construction that links Shwebo, Kyaukmyaung and Singu, collapsed claiming the life of the man with 15 workers being injured and four went missing.
The bridge collapse has caused the sinking of a vessel loading with goods underneath the bridge.
Other injured include 10 from Kyauk Myaung, one monk from Khin Oo and three from Singu.
There were damages with a small number of residential houses, school buildings and pagodas in nine areas -- Sagaing, Shwebo, Kyauk Myaung, Khin Oo, Mandalay, Amarapura, Singu, Kyaukse and Tabaitgine, the TV report said.
Other local sources said that casualties will be more than officially announced.
The quake struck Myanmar's northern Mandalay region Sunday morning with an epicenter at Tabaitgine, about 131 kilometers (km) north of Mandalay city and 72 kilometers north of Shwebo township.
With a depth of 20 km, the quake happened at 07:42:37 local time (01:12:37 GMT).
Two moderate aftershocks at a magnitude of 5.0 were experienced, the state TV said, however adding that despite the quake, dams in the quake-hit region remained unaffected.
According to the state TV, more detailed casualties and loss due to the quake are being compiled and relief operation has been underway.
Meanwhile, Xinhua staff have arrived Shwebo and Kyauk Myaung, 70 km and 34 km respectively away from the epicenter, witnessing less damage of houses but were informed by local people that the quake was intensely felt.
