China on Friday condemned an attack at a UN-run school in the northern Gaza Strip, and urged Israel and Palestine to cease fire immediately and unconditionally.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks while commenting on the attack at the school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the town of Beit Hanoun, which happened Thursday. The attack killed 16 and wounded dozens of civilians who took refuge at the school.

"China is deeply concerned with the escalation of conflict between Palestine and Israel," Hong said.

He urged all parties in Israel and Palestine to listen to the appeal of the international community and the Security Council, cooperate with international mediation efforts, cease fire immediately and unconditionally, and avoid any actions that may cause the situation to escalate to protect civilians.
