The location of the landslide was monitored inside the municipality of Salgar, department of Antioquia, northwest Colombia.

Zulma Osorio, a local official, told local media Caracol Radio that more than 40 people were dead and many families were displaced.

The exact number of casualties would be higher as several families are still missing, the official warned.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said on Twitter that the government will attend to the emergency in Salgar and help the victims.

"Those affected will receive all our support," he said.
