The bomb targeted a security check point in the town, some 130 km east off the capital Tripoli, at around 8:30 local time (0630 GMT), the source said.

Some local witnesses saw heavy smokes rising from the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Libya has been suffering a security vacuum and a state of anarchy since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country has been plagued in escalating violence and similar attacks.
