A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday applauded Cambodia's adherence to the one-China policy and the country's cooperation with China in cracking down on telecom fraud.

Spokesperson Lu Kang's comments came after Chinese police brought 63 telecom fraud suspects back from Cambodia on Tuesday as part of a continued crackdown on such crimes.

The suspects -- 50 from the Chinese mainland and 13 from Taiwan -- are suspected of falsely presenting themselves as law enforcement officials over the telephone to extort money from people on the Chinese mainland.

The suspects were brought to the Chinese mainland in order to protect the interests of the victims, said the Ministry of Public Security. In accordance with the consensus across the Taiwan Strait, mainland police authorities have informed Taiwan through normal channels.

Lu said that relevant departments will deal with the case according to law in order to safeguard the legitimate rights of the victims. He believes there will be understanding and support from compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait as well as the international community.

Since the launch of a special crackdown on telecom fraud in November last year, China has cooperated with police in Kenya, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia, destroying 65 telecom fraud rings, arresting 1,168 suspects, including 347 Taiwan residents.
