China News Service:
I would like to ask a question about Taiwan. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation. Currently, the international community's adherence to the one-China principle continues to strengthen, while some countries still attempt to undermine and hollow out the one-China principle. How will China's diplomacy in the new era resolutely curb external forces' interference in the Taiwan question and firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity? Thank you.
Ma Zhaoxu:
As you said, this year marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation. Taiwan's return to China is an important part of the victory of World War II and the post-war international order. A series of documents valid in international law, such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, all confirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan. The historical and legal facts that Taiwan belongs to China are indisputable.
The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm of international relations. It is the political foundation and prerequisite for China to establish and develop diplomatic relations with countries around the world. So far, 183 countries have established diplomatic relations with China based on the one-China principle. In 1971, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed Resolution 2758, deciding to restore all the legitimate rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and immediately expel the representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the U.N. and all its agencies. This resolution completely resolved the issue of China's representation in the United Nations, including Taiwan, and completely eliminated any possibility of creating "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." The authority of the U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758 cannot be challenged.
The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests. Solving the Taiwan question and achieving complete national reunification is the common aspiration of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation. Safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests is the sacred mission of China's diplomacy. Currently, the international community's adherence to the one-China principle is more consolidated, and the Chinese people's just cause of opposing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and striving for national reunification has received widespread understanding and support from the international community.
I want to reiterate that the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair and brooks no external interference. The handful of external forces seeking to exploit the Taiwan question to contain China are playing with fire and will perish by it. The overwhelming trend of China's ultimate and inevitable reunification is unstoppable. Thank you.
